Christmas in Grand Rivers: Festival of Lights, Carriage Rides, and Hot Chocolate Waiting at the Inn

Y'all, if there's a town that does Christmas better than Grand Rivers, I haven't found it. Every year this little village between the lakes turns into something straight out of a movie, and this year the whole thing kicks off about a week from now. Here's your game plan for a holiday weekend (or two) at Kentucky Lake – make your reservations with us, and -SURPRISE!- we have a Christmas tree in every room!

Mark Your Calendar

Friday, November 6: Patti's 1880's Settlement unveils its Festival of Lights.

That same weekend: The Grand Rivers lighted Christmas parade starts at 6 pm on the 6th and travels down J.H. O'Bryan Avenue, right past the shops and restaurants. Pull up a chair along the route, bundle up, and bring something warm to drink.

Saturday, November 14: Grand Rivers Hometown Holidays. Plan to spend the day.

The Festival of Lights

Walking through Patti's when the lights are on is one of my favorite things about living around here. More than a million lights cover the Settlement and the streets of Grand Rivers, and the best part is that strolling through to see them is free.

Here's what I want you to know before you go: you don't need a reservation to see the lights, but you absolutely need one to eat at Patti's. They fill up fast over the holidays. I mean really fast. Call 270-362-8844 and book your table as soon as you know your dates.

And if you can't make it right away, don't panic. The lights stay up well after Christmas, so you've got plenty of time to plan a trip. Patti's does close for a few days around Christmas so their team can be with their families, but the lights stay on. Their Facebook page is the best place for current hours and updates.

And if you're bringing little ones, check Patti's Facebook page for the schedule of when Santa will be there for photos. Bring your camera so you can catch the moment.

Hometown Holidays on the 14th

Hometown Holidays is the kind of event that has something for everybody. It typically includes ice skating, carriage rides through the park, a trackless train to Santa's Magic Igloo for the little ones, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, Dickens-style carolers, a s'mores station, and a character show in the evening. Wear comfortable shoes and plan to stay awhile.

Speaking of carriage rides, horse-drawn Victorian carriage rides through the village are a holiday tradition here, and they go by reservation. Call John's Pass Carriage Service at 270-243-4365 to ask about availability. If you've ever wanted to feel like you're in a Christmas movie, this is your chance.

Where to Eat

Grand Rivers has more good food than you'd expect for a town this size, so here's where I'd send you (after you eat at Patti’s, of course):

The Wake Club is my pick for a weekend meal, and they now offer a weekend brunch that's perfect for a slow morning after a late night of light-gazing. Reservations are a good idea on weekends. Don’t be scared of eating on the patio – it’s heated, and you can see the sun go down over the lake.

Cabin Pizza is open year-round and it's a real favorite around here. It's a family-owned spot, and it's the right answer when everybody's cold, hungry, and ready to sit down. Voted “Best Pizza in Livingston County!”

Between the Lakes Tap House is where I'd go for a quick bite and a beer. They've got a rotating lineup of craft drafts, plus pool, darts, and arcade games if you want to hang around a while. Often there’s live music on the weekends and during special events.

Christmas Shopping at Patti's Settlement

If you've got a gift list, Patti's is a one-stop shop. Stroll the gardens and duck into the little log cabins, and you can knock out a lot of names on your list in one afternoon:

  • Ashleigh's Boutique: women's fashions in a restored log cabin

  • The Pink Tractor: trendy clothing and accessories

  • Reflections: home decor and garden items, plus a great selection of Fontanini Nativity collections

  • River Birch Mercantile: home decor, engraved gifts, candles, and Pandora jewelry

  • Yesterday's Once More: Patti's sauces and seasonings, strawberry butter, take-home pies, and cookbooks, which make easy gifts for anybody who loves to cook

  • G.B. Duck's Toy Emporium: toys for the little ones on your list

When you need a break, the Grist Mill Cafe is right there on the grounds for a warm drink and a snack.

Tastings at Calvin's

When your feet need a break, stop in at Calvin Swine's Moonshine & More, right there at Patti's, for a tasting. Their Rick House Bourbon Tasting Room is a fun spot to warm up with something stronger than hot chocolate.

Let Us Do the Driving

Here's a tip from me to you: if you're heading over to see the lights and you'd like a designated driver, let us know and we'll schedule our shuttle for pick up. That way everybody gets to enjoy the tastings and the cold beers without anybody watching the clock.

Stay with Us

After a night of lights and a day of shopping, there's nothing better than coming back to a comfortable room, a cup of something hot from our lobby, and a quiet place to put your feet up. And since this is a special trip, let us know and we'll add a hot chocolate gift bag to your reservation. Book your room at https://lakehouseinn.com/rooms, or call us at 270-362-4254 and we'll help you plan your weekend.

See y'all at the lake!
