Tour the Elk & Bison Prairie at Land Between the Lakes

I had never been to the Elk & Bison Prairie at Land Between the Lakes.

There. I said it. It’s not that I’m not interested. I just haven’t taken the time to drive over, even though it’s really close to the Inn. So a few weeks ago after church, Brad and I headed out for a Sunday drive and ended up there. It only costs five dollars to get in – and they take cash or card. They’re open dawn to dusk daily.

It was overcast, and late February, so it wasn’t very lush. But without all the foliage, the wildlife was so easy to spot! I was able to get some really good photographs of both elk and bison (along with some bonus turkey shots), and I never got out of the car. (I did, however, stand on my console and stick my head out of the sunroof.)

Fun facts for you: the average weight of the American Bison is around 2000 pounds, and over 200,000 roam North America currently. When the herd of bison at LBL reaches grazing capacity for the park, they sell the excess bison at public auction. Full-grown elk weigh in at around 800 pounds (compared to deer who average about 150 pounds), and the ones at LBL started out in Canada.

What else might you see there? Turkeys, of course. Coyotes and bobcats and turtles. Butterflies and songbirds. Skunks and snakes, too, except that’s a reason for me to NOT visit. Will you be touring the Elk and Bison Prairie at LBL anytime soon?
