Fall Fun Activities Around Kentucky Lake

It was 87 degrees on Saturday, October 18. That's lake weather. Except that the TVA starts lowering the water level in early September, so to save money on future boat repairs, most of us drag that sucker out on Labor Day weekend.

What to do, then? I checked Facebook for some fun events, and set out first to visit the Fall Barn Market at Featherstone Farm, just outside of Mayfield. I've followed this little spot for a couple of years, and y'all it was so cute! Very "Hallmark movie-ish." There was live music, fresh flowers, a mini hayride for the kids, food, crafts and gift items. While I was there, I bought the book Three Guesses from local author Chris McClain Johnson - she signed it and we had a nice chat. I grabbed a burger from Creative Cookin' and headed to town.

I have done the corn maze thing before - back in the 90's before computers helped make them works of art - and they are hot and somewhat scary if you've ever seen Children of the Corn. IYKYK. But I had seen that A-Maize-Ing Farms in Mayfield had a super cool one (dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Jaws, no less), so I hit it up next. The largest corn maze in the state of Kentucky? YESSSSS! I was surprised to see it so close to town, but wow what a crowd! It was $15 for an all-day pass, and there were inflatables, concessions and other activities to do in addition to the corn maze. I was by myself - no takers on fall festival day, unfortunately - so I skipped the maze. But I watched people entering AND exiting. Bad news for Malachi.

A short ride back to Kentucky Lake and I was at Kentucky Dam Village for their Arts in the Park Fall Festival. Surprise, it wasn't in the park, but I suppose that was because of the chance of storms. It was indoors - and there were lots of booths. I made a stop for some honey from the Miller Ridge Bee Company out of Madisonville - their Sweetboy Honey is perfect for a fall hot toddy - and got a free sample of their Sugared Lemon Lotion Bar. Yummy to smell and oh-so-good for my skin! I was then distracted by a smoky tobacco smell, so I wandered over and bought a picture frame from JMJ Carson Farms - they make crafts from tobacco sticks!

If I had run to my car at this time, I would still have money in my purse. (Ladies, you know how that goes.) So there was this jewelry booth hosted by Keeney Scottish Tinkers, with spoon rings like my mom and I wore in the 1970's. So many styles - heavy and dainty and vintage. I chose to wear mine home. :)

So now what? Like all power shoppers, I needed a glass of wine and a fire - luckily, The Lakehouse Inn at Sledd Creek has a no-fuss gas firepit so I didn't even have to get my hands dirty. Sweet thing met me there and we talked about what's next for the Inn.

Maybe that's what I'll write about next.....
