A New Spot to Visit at Kentucky Lake

“Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.”

If you recognize that line, then you and I are both huge fans of the Nora Ephron classic “You’ve Got Mail.” After seeing that movie in the theater, I knew two things for sure: falling in love must be the greatest feeling ever, and a cozy bookstore is like a mini-vacation for your soul.

Benton, Kentucky has a new jewel in its downtown crown – and this cozy little bookstore begins by being personal. Birdie’s Books & Beans (in Benton, no less – quite the alliteration) opened last month and oh, how I want to hang out there. There are books of all genres – new AND pre-loved – and there are plenty to choose from without feeling overwhelmed. There’s a children’s section, as well, and a gift selection in case you’re out shopping. What about the beans? Y’all, it’s also a little coffee shop! How cute is THAT?!

On the day I stopped by, I had to at least introduce myself and find out who owns this cute little spot. It’s Elizabeth Largent (she lives here now, but she’s a Tennessee transplant like me) and she loves that store as much as I love the Inn. I totally asked her if she had a favorite author (she loves them all) or a favorite genre (she loves them all) – and of course, I asked where “Birdie” comes from. It’s a trio of reasons! First – it’s a vintage nickname for Elizabeth. Second, she loves birds (her fave is the puffin, and she has traveled to see them up close). Finally – and this is the best part – remember Jean Stapleton’s character in “You’ve Got Mail?” The one who kept Kathleen Kelly on track in business and love? Who helped Kathleen run The Shop Around the Corner?

Yep, her name was Birdie.
